9 Magical Ideas to Start Your Own Grimoire

9 Magical Ideas to Start Your Own Grimoire

There’s something quietly powerful about writing your magic down.

Spells, rituals, reflections.

Not because your journal needs to be a sacred artifact or because you must “do it right,” but because recording creates a space where your intuition can respond to you.

And if the word grimoire feels intimidating, you’re not alone.

Many of us imagine ancient leather tomes and flawless calligraphy, when in reality, a grimoire can be a notebook with coffee stains, half-finished pages, and spells written in messy pen at midnight. This is your journal, and it doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful.

Whether you’re brand new to the craft or returning to it after years away, here are 9 simple, beautiful, magical ways to begin. Feel free to pick and choose, try one each month or go all in and see what feels right to you.

1. The “First Page” Spell

Start your grimoire with a dedication page. Write a short blessing for your journal. This could be something like a protective charm, a vow, or a simple intention.

  • May these pages hold truth.
  • May this book be a lantern when I feel lost.
  • May my magic grow in gentleness.

2. A One-Card Tarot Pull Page

We love this one! Just pull one tarot or oracle card and record:

  • The card name
  • Your first impression
  • The message you think it has for you today
  • One symbol that stands out

Even if you don’t know the “official meaning,” your instinct counts.

3. Moon Phase Notes

Create a page where you track the moon phase and write a few lines about how you feel.
Over time, you may notice patterns like:

  • More energy during the waxing moon
  • Vivid dreams around the full moon
  • Emotional clarity during the waning moon

This can become its own kind of spell. Take this a step further and set your New Moon Intentions.
How do you feel as we approach the new moon?
What do you want to release and welcome?

4. The “Signs I’m Seeing” Log

Write down repeating signs:

  • Animals you keep seeing
  • Numbers (111, 444, etc.)
  • Recurring symbols
  • Repeated words in songs, books, or conversations

You don’t need to force meaning, just collect. The pattern often reveals itself later.

Spell Creation in Grimoire

5. Spell Creation Page

If you do any spellwork at all, or even simple intention setting, record what you did and how it unfolded.

  • What is my intention for this spell?
  • What do I need to cast my spell? Ingredients, Tools, Steps
  • What happened in the days/weeks after

This is one of the most valuable grimoire pages you can keep.

6. A Gratitude & Grounding Page

When your mind is spinning, and the world feels out of control, magic can feel far away.
Create a page where you list:

  • 3 things you’re grateful for
  • 3 things you’re releasing
  • 3 things you want to call in

This is simple, powerful, and incredibly stabilizing.

7. Dream Journal Page

Dreams are one of the oldest forms of magic — and one of the easiest to ignore.

  • What do you remember from your dream?
  • How did you feel when you woke up?
  • Did you note any symbols?
  • Was there anything you think it might be asking you to notice?

Even one sentence a morning adds up.
Even if it doesn’t make sense right away, referring to this page and reflecting later can give you a lot of clarity.

8. Herb Profile Page

Choose one herb at a time and record:

  • What is the history and folklore?
  • Does it have any magical associations?
  • How could you use it (tea, bath, sachet, cooking)

Over time, this becomes your own botanical grimoire. Consider sketching or adding some of the herbs to the pages.
This will be one of the pages that you love reading again when you are flipping through your finished journal.

9. Wheel of the Year Reflection Pages

Even if you don’t celebrate every Sabbat, this is a beautiful way to connect to seasonal magic.

  • What you’re harvesting
  • What you’re releasing
  • What do you want to honour
  • How does the season feel in your body

Future you will thank yourself for making notes.
Each season, you will be able to reflect, prepare and in some cases even protect your energy.

Your Grimoire Doesn’t Need Rules

It can be messy. It can be unfinished. It can be scribbled in pen at 2 AM with a half-burnt candle beside you.

What matters is that it holds you.

Your thoughts, your patterns, your questions, your magic.

Start with one page. Then another.

And before you know it, you’ll have created a magical journal without even trying.
